Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in muscle tissue and plays a key role in many bodily functions. For this reason it is considered a "conditionally essential" amino acid. Research has shown glutamine supplementation to aid in recovery from exercise, surgery and trauma, provide benefit for gastrointestinal conditions, wound healing, cancer, HIV/ AIDS, provide enhancement of immune function, and prevent complications associated with chemotherapy, radiation and bone marrow transplant.
During stressful situations (from heavy resistive weight training to surgery) the body can lose a large amount of glutamine. A loss of glutamine may be a signal for protein catabolism (muscle breakdown).
